A New Category of Tools - Impact Driver Sockets and Bits

There are dozens of "kits" available from all the manufactures that have one quarter inch hex drive screwdriver bits in them. They work well in your screwdriver and fairly well in your cordless drill, but when you use them in your new cordless impact driver they don't last long. You regularly change them, but he next thing you know, the bits are stripping out the screws.The new impacting drivers have considerably more torque than cordless screwdrivers and drill/drivers so the current hex bits just don't work well.

To fix this DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Makita have come out with better driver bits. These new bits for your impact driver are stronger, harder and should last much longer than the tradtional screw driver bits. Of course they will work well in your drill/driver too!

Milwaukee has introduced the "Milwaukee Shockwave," Dewalt the "Impact Ready" bits. Makita calls them "Impact Driver" Sets.

Craftsman is noticeably silent in this category, yet. Craftsman is testing a rugged new design and will introduce their own sometime this year. I would like to see Craftsman completely reorganize their nut driver bits, torx screwdriver bit sets, driver bits, impact screwdriver bits, and impact driver sets.

It will take some time for this category to shake out for terminology. There will be some confusion because there is a traditional category called impact driver bits. The category refers to a tool that you struck with a hammer to loosen stubborn screws and nut. Another traditional category called impact sockets is commonly referred to heavy duty sockets used with air impact tools.

Battery-Powered Power Tools - Assessing the Pros and Cons

There are a lot of choices when it comes to project equipment. You can choose from hand, corded and battery-powered tools to complete all the projects around the house. The question is what kind should you get?

* Portability

Well, this one is obvious. You are not limited to the distance from the wall outlet to the tool. You should not try to increase this distance with an extension cord either because that can be dangerous as well as reduce the power. With the battery-operated pieces, you can go wherever you want to and not be tied to the wall-literally.

* Safety

If you have a lot of power tools plugged in, the cords can become an accident waiting to happen. You don't have to be clumsy to trip on a cord and if kids are around, they may trip or pull on the cord as well. Also, the cord itself is more apt to become damaged over time which creates a dangerous electrical situation.

* Convenience

Again, you aren't tethered to the wall outlet and you can get into spots not accessible with a corded piece because the battery-powered ones are often smaller than the corded ones. They also come with carrying cases that you can just pop them into and take them on the road or wherever. You don't have to roll up a long cord before you store it.

Negative Aspects

* Cost

The battery operated pieces are typically more expensive than their corded counterparts. Usually the more convenient option is also the more expensive. Plus, there are more expenses than just buying the equipment. For these, it is a good idea to purchase a second or even third battery to have as a back-up. This way, if you have a time-consuming project and you run out of juice, you can switch them out instead of waiting to charge up again. If you don't buy a second one, the aspect of convenience is kind of negated.

* Power

Power tools run on a portable charge tend to be less powerful than their corded cousins. However, the difference, depending on the quality of the equipment, is negligible. If you are a hobbyist or just have simple projects to complete, the battery version should be sufficient. For bigger more complicated projects, you may want to consider corded ones.

The best thing to do before buying any power tools, whether corded or battery-powered, is to do your homework. Hop on-line and check for reviews from owners as well as businesses. Go into your local home store and ask for demonstrations or a class.

Try out both kinds to see what feels most comfortable. Chances are good that a battery-powered machine will be sufficient for your project needs, as long as you don't forget the extra battery!

The most common type in use today is the twist bit. It can be used to bore holes in metal, wood, and plastic depending on the angle and fluting of the bit. Twist bits are commonly available in many sizes, from the tiny ones with a diameter of about two thousandths of an inch to those with a diameter approaching four inches. Lengths for home use can reach almost forty inches.

Center bits often are used for metals to make a starter hole that will be drilled with a larger bit. However, the true purpose of center bits is to make an indentation for a lathe. Spotting bits are actually the preferred choice for starter holes.

When the job calls for enlarging a hole that already exists, core or reamer bits can be used. The choice is determined by how much the hole needs to be enlarged. Reamers should be used when only a small increase is needed, while cores should be used when much more material must be removed.

One type that is very popular with construction workers is the speed or step bit, also called a Unibit. These can drill holes in numerous sizes, eliminating the need to switch bits for each new task. They work with plywood, particle board, sheet rock, and many more materials.

Masonry bits are designed for use with an electric or battery powered hammer drill. Hammering of the masonry at the end of the bit helps increase penetration. They are marketed in a wide array of sizes as well as lengths.

Electricians have helped make installer bits popular. These may also be called bell hangers. The bit itself features a hole, and when the bit is inserted, it can fish wiring out from between walls and bring it back.

By selecting the proper type and size you need for the job to be performed, you can finish faster and with neater results. Most bits can be used with a portable electric drill, but there are times when you may have to resort to a hand bit. Fortunately, these times occur only rarely.
